Every July 4, the United States celebrates one of its most important days: Independence Day. This date commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, a pivotal moment in the country’s history that marked the birth of a nation based on the ideals of freedom, equality and human rights.
The story behind the 4th of July begins in a context of tension between the thirteen American colonies and the United Kingdom. The colonies were tired of taxation, lack of representation in the British Parliament and restrictions that limited their autonomy. Inspired by the ideas of freedom and self-determination, a group of colonial leaders decided to take a bold step: to declare their independence and seek a new path as a sovereign nation.
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson. This document not only proclaimed the formal separation of the colonies from British rule but also established the fundamental principles on which the new nation would be based: that all men are created equal and have inalienable rights, such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Since then, the Fourth of July has become a symbol of patriotism and national pride, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the values that underpin the United States.
In short, U.S. Independence Day is much more than a holiday; it is a celebration of the history, values and hope of a country that was born with the dream of freedom and justice for all.
